Mail/DNS “Professional” Service Level Changes

We’re modifying the “Professional” level of our Mail/DNS service lineup:

  • Professional will be repriced to $149/mo.
  • Professional Plus has been discontinued.

All customers that have existing Professional level services will remain unchanged as long as it continues to be renewed on time, including service levels that have been discontinued. However, as of this announcement we are no longer accepting new subscriptions to the discontinued Professional Plus.

New Interface Graph Options

We’ve added some new graphing options for the interface traffic graphs available to our Colocation, Dedicated Server, and Internet Access customers. Previously the account control center only displayed a 24-hour live (with 15 minute delay) graph; interface graphs are now available with as little as a 5 minute delay from live traffic and with several viewing options from 12-hours to a month.

Default 24-hour graph display. (Note the new buttons above the graph.)
The new 12-hour detail display option.
The new 12-hour detail display option of the same graph.

We’ve also added a 95th percentile line on all traffic graphs, however it’s based on the currently displayed interval, not the full billing month. As such these graphs are not used for burstable billing.

IPv6 with Android Mail App

We recently noticed a problem with the “Mail” app on Android phones failing to send mail when the phone has an IPv6 connection (either via Wi-Fi or 4G LTE). The problem was traced to the Mail app sending an improperly formatted IPv6 literal in the EHLO command. We’ve updated our outbound mail service to account for this discrepancy.

RFC2821 defines and IPv6 address literals as such:

address-literal = "[" IPv4-address-literal /
                      IPv6-address-literal /
                      General-address-literal "]"

IPv6-address-literal = "IPv6:" IPv6-addr

The Android Mail app is omitting the “IPv6:” string in its literals.

Internal Server Maintenance this Weekend

This weekend we’re going to be building a new server for the internal system that runs Asterisk for our office and the Request Tracker ticketing system that handles email for role accounts (like support and billing). Although the current server is still faithfully running with its original Athlon with 786MB of RAM, it’s starting to show its age (RT runs exceptionally slow) and the time has come to give it a forklift upgrade. As such, messages set to support, billing, and sales will be monitored manually (we’re using Mail Mirror on our domain) but they won’t get the usual auto response until after the new server is back online. Our office will also be unavailable by phone during the upgrade, although we rarely receive any calls on the weekends.

The new server we’re building for this upgrade will be an Intel Xeon X3430 with 8GB of DDR3 RAM on a Supermicro X8SIL-F motherboard in a 4U case instead of a 1U since we need to install multiple cards for Asterisk and the drive array controller.

UPDATE: We’ve finished restoring all of the major services and we’re working on the rest of the clean up.

New Feature: Primary DNS Update Multiple Zones

We’ve added a multi-domain tool to Primary DNS that allows updates for simple record types to be easily changed for multiple zones. For example, this feature can be used as a “find and replace” to update an IP addresses or its TTL wherever a match is found (within selected domains). Record types supported are: A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, SPF, CNAME, and PTR. To access this feature click on the “Update Multiple Zones” button on the Primary DNS page in the account control center.
